The renowned Hamburg Trio journeys into the night on it's new GENUIN CD with works by Arnold Schonberg, Franz Schubert and Alexander von Zemlinsky. The ensemble featuring the musicians Mitsuru Shiogai (violin), Ulrich Horn (cello) and Eberhard Hasenfratz is distinguished by it's unique sound, not least because the two string instruments come from the same skilled hand: the violin maker Giovanni Gagliano from the end of the 18th century. The two framing works on the CD approach the theme of "night" from different angles: Schoenberg's "Transfigured Night" is a passionate, late-Romantic narrative, while Schubert's "Notturno" is a moment of early-Romantic eternity. In between is the rarely heard but rewarding trio by Zemlinsky - chromatic, grounded and polished perfection.
